Subsoiler is indicated when there is a dense and/or hard layer of soil below the normal tillage depth. Such a layer can result from physical causes such as machinery traffic or from physicochemical sources that produce cementation among soil aggregates. Such a hard layer, sometimes called a plow pan, can lead to poor water infiltration and drainage, reduced soil aeration, and diminished growth of crop roots.
